A Mother’s Point of View

My son Daniel is 26 years old. He was born with a rare disorder called Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) which causes multiple physical and mental disabilities. Daniel functions at about a one year old level and can’t walk or talk so he needs constant care. Fortunately he is not medically fragile. Daniel has lived in a nursing home since he was 18 and has attended UCP for the past four years.

I have found that one of the qualities needed in raising a handicapped child is not being afraid to ask for help when you need it. I have a large family who has always been there for me. I worked full time when Daniel was growing up and I was blessed to find compassionate and caring child care providers who thought of him as part of their families and not just a job. Also I found that it was important for me to take time for myself either by having a family member watch Daniel overnight or taking advantage of respite care that was available. I knew I could care for him better if I took care of myself as well.

Over the years whether Daniel lived at home or elsewhere, I have always been very involved in his life. I bring him home for overnight visits several times a month. I think it’s important to get engaged with the organizations and people who care for our loved ones. I’ve been active with the CdLS Foundation which is a support group for families facing CdLS. Daniel lives at Pine Grove ICF/MR Unit in Parma. I visit there regularly and am on the Human Rights Committee. I enjoy going there on weekends to feed Daniel lunch so I can sit and talk with the staff as they feed other residents. Also I visit UCP regularly where I always feel welcomed whether by the people at the front desk, Daniel’s classroom or if I run into Carmen or Natalie in the halls.

I feel blessed that I have such a wonderful and dedicated team taking care of Daniel. If something were to happen to me today, I would feel confident that Daniel is in good hands with people who truly love him. That gives me peace of mind.

Linda McCrae, Mother of Daniel

Our thanks to Linda for sharing her personal experience as a mother and caregiver for an adult child with disabilities.

Christian Borrero

Twenty-four year old Christian Borrero is thriving as part of UCP of Greater Cleveland’s Community Employment Program. He sums up what this experience means to him in just one word: independence.

When Christian first joined UCP, he was employed at the National City (now PNC) Operations Center, processing outgoing mail for the bank. In order to seek out ways to become more independent, he requested skills training which allowed him to grow and take on more demanding work responsibilities. This growth afforded him the opportunity to transfer to Fifth Third Bank Northeast Ohio’s Corporate Headquarters. He has now been with Fifth Third for five years and has progressed into positions with increasing duties. He initially worked as an assistant file clerk in the mortgage department where he was assigned the task of organizing all mortgage files for a team of five clerks. He was then promoted to administrative assistant for a team of individuals in the Private Banking Department. He currently holds that position as well as attends to the front reception desk for several hours each day. Christian successfully navigates the structure of the bank and is a true member of the team. While he walks through the facility, he greets all his co-workers with a smile.

Christian continues to grow in all facets of his life. Last year, he moved into his own apartment! As an engaged citizen, he also runs a social group for youth with disabilities. He is also a part of Partners in Policymaking, a leadership training program facilitated through the ARC of Greater Cleveland. This program provides leadership skills training and guidance on how to influence public policy at all levels of government, and all activities are based on the belief that the most effective and enduring public policy decisions are made by the people who need and use services in partnership with elected officials and policymakers.

There is no doubt that Christian is a talented, motivated young man whose skills and drive will allow him to continue his path of success. Watch this short video and hear about his experiences from Christian himself.

Sprint into the Night Raises Funds with Festive Atmosphere

Close to 200 individuals gathered Saturday, May 21st at Nighttown in Cleveland Heights to celebrate Sprint into the Night, a fundraising event honoring Team UCP triathletes. Presented by Platinum Sponsor KeyBanc Capital Markets and Gold Sponsor Audi of Bedford, the summer cocktail party raised over $30,000 to benefit the programming of UCP of Greater Cleveland. The evening featured an array of great silent and live auction items, as well as a Grand Prize Raffle for a weekend rental of a Porsche or Mercedes!

For the fourth year in a row, a group of women from Cleveland Heights, University Heights and Shaker Heights joined together to make this event a reality. Formed by Megan McMahon in honor of her children Kevin and Anna Mary, who have cerebral palsy, the Sprint into the Night committee set out to create a fun event that would have meaningful impact in the community where they live. Many of the committee members also participate in the triathlon, and this event is a way to increase awareness of their efforts and raise additional funds. Sprint into the Night has grown each year in dollars raised, attendance and even in the novelty of the auction items for bidding!

This year’s event included great food from Nighttown, as well as a signature rum punch and glazed donuts for dessert, courtesy of Amy Joy. A jazz quartet from the Cleveland School of the Arts provided entertainment – and received rave reviews! With near perfect weather and record attendance, Sprint into the Night was a huge success and people are already talking about 2012! UCP of Greater Cleveland expresses our gratitude to the sponsors, donors, attendees and committee members who made Sprint into the Night possible.

You can see the fun yourself by checking out the photo gallery here. To be included on the list for next year’s event, contact Beth Lucas at (216) 791-8363, ext. 227 or blucas@ucpcleveland.org.
