For Immediate Release

United Cerebral Palsy is the Official Charity of the Triathlon
Team UCP Returns to Raise Funds and Awareness for the Cleveland Non-Profit
(CLEVELAND) The Cleveland Triathlon has once again partnered with United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cleveland (UCP), making it the Official Charity of the 23rd Annual race on Sunday, August 2, 2009. The event takes place in the North Coast Harbor area of Downtown Cleveland.
This event will mark the 2nd year of Team UCP which includes triathletes, recreational enthusiasts and non-athletes alike who unite to raise funds and awareness for United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cleveland. Last year, 65 team members raised over $100,000 in pledges for the miles they ran, biked and swam. For 2009, Team UCP’s goal is to increase both the number of members and dollars raised! Each dollar contributed impacts programming for over 1,000 children and adults throughout Northeast Ohio.
Triathlon Producer, Pacific Sports, will once again allow family members of individuals with disabilities to include their children in the race by pulling them in bike trailers during the cycle leg and pushing them in jogging strollers during the run portion. Ten families tackled the Triathlon in 2008, and plan to do so again this year, along with employees of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cleveland.
UCP Executive Director, Trish Otter notes, “For each of these athletes, the race is about accomplishing a personal goal and striving to achieve their greatest potential through hard work and perseverance, just as our clients do every day. There continues to be a natural, mutually beneficial partnership for UCP and the Cleveland Triathlon.”
Many of the families were inspired to race with their children by Team Hoyt, a father-son team who compete together in marathons and triathlons across the country. Rick has cerebral palsy, and Dick has pushed and pulled him over finish lines for over 25 years.
The Cleveland Triathlon offers several categories and race distances. If you are not ready to tackle the triathlon, there are many other ways to be involved. You can choose to complete a short race, be a part of a relay team, you or your organization can be an event sponsor or sponsor an individual athlete, or you can volunteer on the day of the race.
