ANDREW'S STORY
Andrew has been a part of United Cerebral Palsy's Independent Living Program for the past three years. Case manager Ina Bailey-Bryan describes him as bright, polite, rather quiet and very charming.
"Andrew has shown great resilience when facing health and employment challenges that might cause a person significant stress," Bailey-Bryan said, noting that Andrew recently developed diabetes and was told he probably would have to take insulin for the rest of his life. But, determined to follow his passion for long distance walks and bike rides from Lorain Avenue on the west side to Mayfield and Lee roads on the east, Andrew worked very hard to balance his diet and exercise and learned to control his blood sugar. As a result, he no longer requires daily insulin injections.
"Employment has been a challenge for Andrew as well," Bailey-Bryan commented. He has had to learn four different jobs in a short period of time due to unforeseen circumstances that resulted in job losses. Andrew now is part of the lawn crew working at the metro and east campuses of Cuyahoga Community College.
Andrew loves watching movies and listening to music. He often entertains family and friends by demonstrating the "moonwalk" made famous by his favorite entertainer, Michael Jackson.
"Beneath the charm of Andrew's smile is a determination and will to succeed," said Bailey-Bryan.
