CHILDREN'S STORIES
Jordan’s Story
Jordan inspires others with his engaging personality and positive outlook. The
9-year-old boy loves to bowl and play tennis, and enjoys traveling and camping with his family.
Jordan began therapy at the agency in 2003 after undergoing Rhizotomy surgery, which manipulated the neurons in his spinal column to decrease stiffness in his legs related to cerebral palsy. Jordan's mom, Shelli, discovered that United Cerebral Palsy offered what she wanted during her research on treatment and therapy options. 'I was so impressed with the services available here,' she said.
Jordan has participated in several intensive Steps to Independence® sessions as well as traditional physical and occupational therapies. Shelli praised the United Cerebral Palsy therapists who have been patient motivators for her son, describing them as 'angels.'
Jordan's therapists said that he struggled at first. His low tolerance level and attention span presented significant challenges. But, with his strong communication skills and a great deal of potential, Jordan persevered to the point where he no longer uses a wheelchair and rarely uses his walker. He is now confident and much more independent, and his family and friends are thrilled by his progress.
'He can brush his teeth. He can wash his face. He can tie his shoes. He's dressing himself and he is standing up,' said his mom.
As Shelli expressed gratitude to United Cerebral Palsy and its innovative programs for improving her son's quality of life, occupational therapist Paula Hackley noted that Jordan's spirit of determination is crucial to his success. 'Jordan is an excellent example of a child who sees opportunity everywhere and doesn't let his disability prevent him from enjoying life.'
