CHILDREN'S STORIES
Julia’s Story
Julia is a bright, delightful 5-year-old child with cerebral palsy. She was born full term with minimal complications. Julia has been participating in the agency's therapy programs since 2002. After an initial adjustment period due to the demands of the programs, she has made significant progress.
When she started services at United Cerebral Palsy, Julia was unable to use her right hand to hold or release toys. She also was unable to feed herself, play with small toys, roll or creep. She was not standing or taking steps, even with support. Other issues included significant delay in speech and limited means of communicating with mom, dad, and/or peers.
Today, Julia can regularly use her right hand to perform a variety of tasks, feed herself with some assistance, roll, crawl and sit independently. She initiated using a walker a year within beginning treatment at United Cerebral Palsy. Currently, Julia is able to maintain a standing position and walk independently without the use of a walker or canes, with minimal help and encouragement. She uses a communication device to communicate her wants and needs with great accuracy. Julia also is working on refining left and right hand use, improving gait pattern and improving overall functional abilities in school and home.
Julia's functional gains have astonished her therapists, teachers, doctors and family. She continues to work diligently and is motivated to do her best. Julia's parents have been unwavering in their support of her participation in United Cerebral Palsy's services and in the development and ongoing success of the therapy programs at the agency.
