ADULT STORIES
Tony’s Story
'I'll give it a try.' Anthony (Tony) is not afraid to say the words.
Tony began his partnership with United Cerebral Palsy after injuring his spinal cord in 1997. Able to move only his shoulders, neck and head, he expressed an interest in working with computers to become productively employed. With the assistance of United Cerebral Palsy's Assistive Technology Specialist, Tony has learned a variety of skills. Eager to try new technology as it has become available, Tony has used different head-controlled units and tried a variety of on-screen keyboards and mouse-selection methods. His ultimate selection of the HeadMaster and WiVik was based on ease of use and simplicity.
In 2001, Tony took charge of entering payroll for his co-workers in the agency's Organizational Employment division. Additional data entry duties relate to client activities. 'Tony is an extremely hard worker and a role model for other clients,' said Paul Soprano, Vocational Services Director. 'He always insures that payroll is complete before participating in special events and activities.'
But, when he is ready to have fun, Tony uses his acquired technology skills to facilitate a favorite client activity - 'Pig Skin Pick'Ems.' He gathers football picks during football season and enters them into the national ESPN contest. To maintain his stylish wardrobe, Tony shops online!
Tony credits much of his success since his accident to his strong faith and loving grandmother who raised him and his two younger brothers. He leads a well-rounded life, scheduling public transportation services to attend church and visit friends. Tony is a fishing enthusiast and loves professional Cleveland sports, often rooting for the Indians at Jacobs Field.
Having something productive to do each day is important to Tony, who looks forward to coming to work rather than sitting around the nursing facility he calls home. 'It's like coming out into the real world,' he said. 'And, a paycheck is always a plus, too!'
