Black History Month at UCP

During the month of February, our clients in OakLeaf Day Services and OakLeaf Job Training have learned about and celebrated Black History Month. See the pictures below for some of this month’s highlights.

February 11 – Madame Sheshe regales our clients with stories about African American folklore.
February 18 – The OakLeaf Day Services clients from our three locations (Wolstein, Highland Hills and Westlake) presented their Black History Month dioramas. Some of the topics included famous black inventors, Brown vs. Board of Ed and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The clients in our OakLeaf Job Training program entertained the audience with living diorama’s, acting out people such as Michelle Obama, George Washington Carver and Madam C. J. Walker.
February 22 – Our Activities and Training Manager Amy Vedova talked about the life and poetic works of Langston Hughes. Our clients were so inspired that they decided to collaborate to write a poem about what black history means to them.
February 26 – Fox 8 News in the Morning Anchor Wayne Dawson participated in a Q & A session led by a panel of clients. Later in the afternoon, Dr. Regennia Williams, an independent humanities scholar and consultant, college professor and author, presented about “Black Sacred Music.”
