Assistive Technology Highlight – Apple iPad

Assistive Technology can be both high-and low-tech items that help people with disabilities increase their capabilities and assist with everyday tasks. This includes items from hearing aids and wheelchairs to type-to-speech translators and software that reads what is on the computer screen. Even common technology, such as the Apple iPad, can be used as assistive technology when paired with specialized applications or as they are commonly known, apps.

At UCP of Greater Cleveland, the iPad is used with almost all of the children in LeafBridge Therapy Services. Its sensitive, easy-to-touch screen makes it simple to use for numerous children and with the addition of a switch* it makes the entire iPad accessible to yet a broader range of kids. About 75% of LeafBridge clients use a switch to control the iPad. LeafBridge’s four iPads rarely sit idle. Here are just some of the ways the iPad is used:

  • Increasing fine motor skill capabilities
  • Learning to type using the on-screen keyboard with their fingers or through the use of a switch
  • Working on letter formation, a key aspect of handwriting
  • Using apps to work on speech articulation and communication
  • Motivating children to climb the stairs or dance along to their favorite song while using a stander
  • Improving social skills through games where the iPad must be passed from one player to another
  • Fostering independence, where a child has the freedom to control all aspects of the iPad without assistance

The iPad continues to evolve, making it more and more useful during therapy. Apple and app designers are increasing accessibility, and new apps are being created every day that serve people with disabilities. Assistive Technology like the iPad allows people with disabilities to increase their capabilities and creates a lasting impact on the children of LeafBridge.

* A switch is another piece of Assistive Technology, which allows people who struggle with motor control to more easily access their environment.
