Planned Giving: Planting Seeds for the Future

Planned giving is a form of charitable donation that involves contributing one’s assets through wills and estate plans.  It’s a lot like planting a tree today, so that someone can enjoy the shade tomorrow.

The typical planned gift, often called a bequest, is one that will provide charitable benefit to a nonprofit organization upon the donor’s death.  A donor may also make different types of planned gifts to a nonprofit while they are still alive and receive a charitable deduction immediately, but the nonprofit does not receive any funds for its benefit until the donor passes away.

At UCP of Greater Cleveland, we try to make giving a planned gift as easy as possible.  We have a variety of planned giving options, depending on your wishes, which are detailed on our website at www.ucpcleveland.org/giving-and-volunteering/donate/planned-giving/.

Planned gifts are a powerful way to make significant impact on an organization that you connect with and want to support.  For nonprofits, these types of substantial gifts help us to plan strategically for our organization’s future.  Planned giving is also beneficial to you, the donor, because it allows you to:

  • Make a personally significant gift, often larger than you feel is possible
  • Enjoy the satisfaction of providing means for the organization to meet its mission
  • Save on gift and estate taxes
  • Reduce or avoid capital gains taxes
  • Pass assets on to family members at reduced tax costs
  • Leave a legacy without giving up assets

The first step in preparing to make a planned gift that is right for you is to speak with your financial advisor.
