The Mobility Clinic provides AT (Assistive Technology) assessments and equipment fittings to those in need to increase independent mobility and help them access the world around them. AT levels the playing field for children with disabilities to ensure they have similar mobility experiences as children without disabilities to achieve gains in social, cognitive, visual and spatial awareness.
The Mobility Clinic is staffed by an OT, PT and a speech-language therapist with a combined 30 years of experience with AT. These therapists work together with the client, family and vendor, who provides the needed equipment for the trial. During the first appointment, the OT and PT interview the client and caregivers, where they obtain a thorough medical history, inventory of the client’s current equipment and a review of the client’s established AT goal/overall therapy goals. The therapists then complete an AT assessment to determine what type of device would benefit the client based on trials of demo equipment from various vendors. If the client needs multiple pieces of adapted equipment the assessment process could take up to 3 hours. A collaborative interdisciplinary approach ensures the best product “fit” for the client.
Examples of specific AT equipment include wheelchairs, power chairs, seating devices, adaptive car seats, adaptive transportation strollers, standers, alternative bed/sleep positioning and lift systems.
